Dakar Tested: Motion Pro MP Tool – Size Matters!
For motorcyclists, little things matter. Especially the little things we carry on our bikes. Just about every rider wants their bike to be as light and uncluttered as possible. Even Uncle Ned and Aunt Betty think twice about everything that goes into the Gold Wing’s saddle bags before a ride. Only one kitchen sink!
I’ve done a fair amount of adventure touring, off-road touring, and rallying where this concept is taken to the extreme. I can be sure my bike will suffer and something on it will break, but I’m very limited in the amount of stuff I can carry. To keep my pack light, I strap spare parts and heavy tools to the frame of the bike. I look for anything that can do double duty, like a 21” front tube that will also fit in an 18” rear tire.
A few years back, I stumbled upon Motion Pro’s MP tool. Designed as a swiss-army knife for motorcyclists, this little tool packs a big punch. You don’t get the toothpick or the nail file, but you do get an impressive list of high quality tools in a package about the size of a pack of cigarettes. Open the zippered pouch and you’ll see:
- 10 and 12 mm box wrenches
- 10mm and 7/16 open-end wrenches
- 8, 10, 12 and 14mm sockets
- ¼ and 3/8 socket drives
- Phillips #2 and #3 screwdrivers
- Straight slot screwdrivers
- 5 and 6mm allen keys
- Bottle opener
Think about it. You can probably fix anything on your bike with these tools. KTM riders will want to toss a 13mm socket into the MP Tool’s pouch. For long distances off-road, I add some tire irons, axle wrenches, chain breaker and a small pair of pliers. Done.
Well designed, tough, light and small; the MP Tool made it into my pack, which is saying a lot. Here I am pillaging parts from my brother’s bike in Mauritania in this year’s Dakar, all with the MP Tool Kit.
