Road to Ruins: Episode 3 – BMW R1200GS Adventure v. Ducati Multistrada 1200 S
Fri, 27/04/12 – 11:34 | Comment

BMW’s R1200GS Adventure is the gold standard in adventure touring bikes, but now it’s facing down challengers like the Ducati Multistrada 1200 S Touring. Is the road to ruins for the BMW paved by the likes of the Ducati? Before we find out off the pavement, a little protection and preparation is in order. If we had the licensing, we’d cue the A-team montage music and cut to the folks at AltRider.com.

Baja: Tropic of Cancer – Hazards of the Road

South of the oasis town of Mulege and rounding the corners overlooking Bahia Concepcion it’s hard not to be distracted. White sailboats, float on azure waters, bracketed by eggshell beaches, all rendered in travel brochure saturation… And then someone throws a car at you – several, in fact. The topper though is the bus.

MKride: Preparations – BMW Enduro Training

At 10:55am I let out my first whimper, it was low and quiet enough that no one else in my riding group could hear. Whipping the thin, light, dust out of my eyes I realized we had only been riding for about one hour, and it was only the first day. Expectations and confidence were already shattered; this was going to be an intense BMW Enduro two-day training course.

2011 Yamaha FZ8 Review – 8 is the new 6

While the Yamaha’s Fazer family has been a European mainstay since 1998, it’s still relatively new in Canada. For 2011 Yamaha has delivered the FZ8, a bike that owes much to its bigger and more brutish sibling the FZ1, and surprisingly little to the defunct FZ6. That positions the bike to be novice and intermediate rider friendly, so it needs to be both frisky (or even occasionally ferocious) and friendly all at once.

Baja: Tropic of Cancer – Coco’s Corner

“You’re not a motorcyclist until you’ve been to Coco’s Corner.” We’ve picked up this Baja saying along the way, but I’m unclear as to where. It’s un-attributable, but battering the Varaderos over 40kms of washboard and gravel, snaking through canyons, and viewing western movie perfect cactus forests has proven the saying’s truth.

Baja: Tropic of Cancer – Gonzaga

Thirty kms of grinding dirt, front-end stepping-out rock and battering washboard from the pavement’s end, about 50kms south of Puertecitos lies Gonzega. A gem of the Baja sitting on the Sea of Cortez.
